Joachim Assistantship

The Herman L. Joachim Endowment Graduate Assistantship is available to students due to the generous contributions from the Herman L. and Gertrude Joachim Endowment Fund. This Assistantship is provided in conjunction with the Syracuse Pulp and Paper Foundation.

The Joachim Assistantship is awarded to graduate students in the Department of Chemical Engineering (formerly the Department of Paper and Bioprocess Engineering) that are interested in extending their education and careers in management while pursuing their scientific and engineering education at SUNY-ESF. Herman Louis Joachim was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France, and earned a Ph.D. degree at the University of Munich. He managed paper mills throughout the United States and was responsible for numerous expansions and modernizations in the industry. He was a life member of the Paper Industry Management Associations (PIMA) and a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Joachim was a recipient of the Counselor of the Year Award from the Small Business Administration, and also received the Presidential Award. Dr. Joachim was exemplified by his excellence and management, his entrepreneurial skills, and his outstanding leadership. To foster and encourage those students pursuing advanced scientific degrees to expand their scope to business and management endeavors, the Joachim graduate assistantship is awarded to students pursuing scientific degrees with additional training in business or management.

Throughout my tenure in Graduate School at SUNY-ESF, I was employed by the Syracuse Pulp and Paper Foundation as a Herman L. Joachim Graduate Fellow and Graduate Assistant. During my employment, I participated in many activities and responsibilities.
